Last week at the D10 conference, Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers presented another of her much-studied Internet Trends reports. This year the title was,  These presentations (the slideshow is included below) have historically been rich with statistics and while that provides a get source, it can sometimes be hard to extract key points. We reviewed the reporting by Liz Gannes and here is what we think are some important trends that marketers and creatives in the mobile space should know.

Globally of 6.1 billion mobile subscribers 1.1 billion are 3G subscribers. 3G is important as this is the base cell network technology to support rich smartphone experiences.

There are 953 million smartphone subscribers. Smartphone adoption continues, but there is still a lot of upside.

Global mobile traffic was 10% of all Internet trafficdouble what it was last year. The chart below shows just how impressive this is.

India reached an important milestone – In May mobile Internet traffic exceeded desktop Internet traffic.

The current popular thread in the press is that mobile monetization is lagging (see the drag on post-IPO Facebook shares). But for the majority of marketers solving typical issues for businesses, the growth trend in mobile remains very strong and the mobile web – meaning websites that can be easily used on smartphones – is going to be a major focus for years to come.
