“It’s about having a clear vision of what you want to achieve, what problem you want to solve and then getting to a point where you have a product,” explains Christian Gurney, President and CEO of Torsion Mobile, as a preview to his presentation at the April BIZ Luncheon.
Gurney’s presentation entitled “Building and Launching a Product – Lessons Learned” is intended for a wide audience as he notes, “I don’t want to present to a technical audience alone, but a non-technical entrepreneurial audience as well, because the lessons learned are universal.”
Anyone in charge of bringing an idea to life whether they are a marketing manager, someone in development, an entrepreneur, or a business owner with a new service can benefit from the insights this seasoned executive intends to share. “What we want to show is that ideas are a dime a dozen. It’s executing, getting something finished and then taking it to market that is the real differentiator,” he declares.
Among the insights Gurney hopes to share include; staying focused amidst all the distractions, understanding that obstacles are overcome through the teamwork of a well-chosen team and that decisive action is required even if on occasion it leads to mistakes.
The presentation is one his entire career has credentialed him to present. Holder of a degree in Anthropology, two richly rewarding field trips to Africa living with and studying Bushmen groups in the Kalahari Desert led him to conclude he had reached the pinnacle of that career and persuaded him to follow his other passion – Information Technology.
Wasting no time, Gurney was soon rising through the ranks of NASDAQ-listed CE Software, the creator of electronic mail and computer utilities used around the world, where he would ultimately serve as President before moving on to several other C-level positions in technology firms. Additionally, he served on the Iowa Information Technology Council, at the request of Governor Tom Vilsack, and co-founded KGInterDev LLC a technical consulting firm specializing in iPhone, iPad and Android mobile and web-based applications.
Most recently, Gurney and his longtime business partner, Richard Kirsner, founded Torsion Mobile when they saw, as Gurney explains, “It was clear the entire platform of computing was switching to mobile devices so we wanted to build a solution that would be able to take advantage of that change.”
Their first product, Mojaba, enables creative agencies, web designers and other professionals to design and publish mobile-compatible websites for their clients. The Software as a Service tool optimizes formatting of websites for viewing on mobile devices. Mojaba was formally launched in February of this year to rave reviews. BIZCI.org, the website of the Business Innovation Zone, was among the first to employ this technology.
