Barcelona, Spain is the self-proclaimed first Mobile World Capital and has been hosting the Mobile World Congress for the past three days. What we like most is how Barcelona has embraced the mobile spirit and made mobiel a part of it’s blueprint, not only for this event, but for the future, as well.
Far more than a mere communication device, mobiles now serve as our books, health monitors, payment transfer devices, social connectors and tour guides. Mobile technology is embedded in our cars, homes, appliances, governments and utilities. Mobile is enhancing and expanding education and thus, transforming the world. Mobile World Congress 2012 will celebrate the current state of mobile and offer a glimpse into where mobile has the potential to go next. —Mobile World Congress website
The congress is made up of conferences and exhibitions and networking opportunities, and it brings together some of the most forward-thinking mobile experts around the world.
In preparation for the event, Barcelona underwent a mobile transformation. During the campaign Barcelona Go Mobile, 26 new mobile websites were launched for the city’s attractions, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and businesses. It’s a play on the phrase “See the Sites,” in which visitors can tour the city and discover information and locations on their mobile devices — genius marketing to the crowd present at the Mobile Global Congress.
As curious visitors who aren’t in Barcelona this week, we can “See the Sites” ourselves. On the Barcelona Go Mobile website there’s a gallery of the 26 websites and an interactive map of their corresponding locations. We can even browse ‘before and after’ glamour shots of the websites’ transformation to mobile optimization.
And if you’re a Barcelona business and you click the prominent “Go Mobile” button, you can fill out a form and add your business to the map of mobile locations:
The Barcelona Go Mobile initiative is dedicated to publicizing those businesses and attractions within Barcelona that either already have mobile sites or are committed to building one. Complete the form above to make the commitment to a better mobile experience for your customers and your city and we’ll add you to our interactive map so everyone can find your business! — Barcelona Go Mobile
To us, this is just another sign that it’s time for businesses — and even communities — to think seriously about mobile. Now there’s an entire city dedicated to exploring and cultivating the mobile ecosystem, and we haven’t seen a mobile initiative like this yet. We’re guessing Barcelona Go Mobile will last well after the masses of mobile congress-goers retreat from the city, and we hope that this example spurs other city-wide mobile trends, both abroad and in the United States.
